The Vatanai Carenero has a warm deep shade of the brown color - chocholate brown. Even though brown is one of the most popular colors in clothing industry, it's not easy to capture all the beauty of this color on the photo.

We are proud to present our new design - Girasol Frigga! (All those Brits out there, don't fall under your chairs, please).

The name "Frigga" was suggested buy one of our fans on the Facebook. I have aksed our fans to brainstorm about the appropriate name for our new design. We had more than 400 suggestions.

I like the name Frigga very much because of its meaning in the Norse mythology. Frigga is a Norse goddes. In the Norse mythology Frigga is presented as a wife and mother. Frigga lives in her palace, called Fensalir, where she spinns the golden threads and weaves long webs of bright-colored clouds.

When I was reading Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn", the thought "which wrap would Bella wear?" kept popping up in my mind. Actually, Reneesmee was growing so fast that it was, probably, not necessary. But hey, we also try to put our toddlers in the wraps, at least to take a picture. :)

A tale from my childhood. Girasol Donau and Girasol Aurora.

Several of SlingoMama exclusive girasols have been desinged by me. Donau was the first one. I'd like to share with you the story of my Donau design.

As a child I was crazy about reading books. When I was little, my mother worked as a librarian and she took me and my sister to her work at the public library when there was nobody to stay with us at home. And that happend quite a lot, because my father was a military man and was often away.

I think I have read almost every book for children and later for juniors at the library where my mom worked. But most of all I was facinated by the folk tales from different countries.

I was geatly impressed by a tale about the river Donau and a girl, who was in love with some young man, but he didn't have mutual feelings for her. This girl came from time to time to sit along the banks of the Donau river and cried, her tears were falling into the river and Donau was trying to calm her with its waves and wash her sorrows away. One day she jumped into Donau and became a foam. She found happines this way, because she was free and could finally see the sun.

When the young man found out that the girl has jumped into Donau, he suddenly realized that he actualy loved her too and he jumped into Donau river as well, became a foam and joined his beloved. They didn't have human bodies, but they were happy together.

Now I don't know whether it's a sad story or not, but when I red this story as a child, it seemed to me as a story with a happy end and I was genuinly happy for the girl and the young man that they have found each other this way, even though they didn't have human bodies any more.

One day I had a Girasol chart in front of me and I combined together the blue, green and brown stripes and realized that they remind me the story from my childhood about the Donau river, the girl and the young man. This is how the Girasol Donau was born.

The funny thing is that I have never been near the Donau river. Though I very much hope I'll visit it some day.

Almost right away I knew that Donau would get a sister and that her name would be Aurora and that she will have“girly” colors. Aurora is a natural light display which occurs in the polar regions most of the time. I have never seen it, but this beautiful natural fenomenon seems amazing to me.

Donau river is a part of nature and I thought that his sister should be a part of nature as well. I hope to welcome her soon amd I hope that my customers will love her as much as they love Donau.

Vatanai Pamir. Interview with Maria Radanova.

Nowadays the words "hand made" have become a great way of commercial advertising - hand-made soap with pieces of dry fruits inside of it can be sold for much more than the usual soap, and in a nice restaurant they can even brag about the chef cutting rucola without using a knife, with his bare hands. The hero of today's article is fond of experimental archeology, which is when scientists live just like people used to live in ancient times, they learn ancient crafts, rediscover forgotten technolog ies and perform seasonal agricultural activities.

Please, meet Maria Radanova, who loves the art of weaving.

There is a special place in her small apartment: a separate room occupied by a very old loom, which Maria uses to create her wraps for carrying children, which have recently become popular in Europe and in the USA. Maria's cotton baby wraps called "Pamir" are unique because of the forgotten technology, which she has passionately rediscovered. One of those Pamirs, by the way, was sold for 800 euros on an American auction, and the interest for her creations is increasing.

Maria can make no more than 5 Pamirs a year. Young and beautiful, she doesn't like life in the city and dreams of inhabiting a house in the country, although at the moment she lives near Prague and works as an administrator at a kindergarten.

"It has all started with my grandparents, who were from Morava. They were real followers of authentic national tradition. I knew a lot about national costumes and I really liked them when I was a child. I grew up and entered the Social Sciences Academy, where one of the means of social therapy was weaving. I liked it so much that looms and weaving became the only things I cared about."

- Does it really have some kind of therapeutic effect?

" Definitely. Just like farming or, for example, cooking or any other traditional craft/occupation. It has its own special rythm, which calms you. Your one hand does one thing, the other hand is occupied with the other activity, your feet are also busy while your head is thinking. It develops coordination and the ability to concentrate. There is also a matter of colors. For example, a holeric person can treat his temper by looking at something blue. Therefore it is a widespread method. A person who spends a lot of time in front of a computer and starts weaving, might experiecne a great relaxation.

- And how did you get this enormous ancient loom?

"That happed accidently. Right now I have four looms, and I use only one of them. The other three rest peacefully in my friends' basement in Crconosh. One is for making light shawls, the second one is for making heavy woolen things and the third one is for making clothes. I have friends who are involved in the leather-processing business, and they asked me to help them to build looms. We had a carpenter make wooden details and I put them all together for the machine to work properly. They appreciated my help enough to give me this ancient loom.

-Five scarfs a year. Is that due to low demand or your physical abilities?

"I can make more than five if my husband helps me, but it is very hard. It is not very much fun to sit behind the loom for the whole day. There is demand, we get hundreds of orders for the Pamir, but we can only satisfy three or four customers, all the others have to wait long enough for their children to grow up. Besides, all the taxes and insurance take about half of what I make."

-Have you every though of taking studends, helpers, organising classes for weavers or tutoring?

"I have taught some people to weave. When I was 22 I was so inspired by the perspectives of the weaving on the loom for people with mental problems, that I used to spend great amounts of time just running aroung the city and promoting those methods, but nobody really cared. But in about 5-6 weeks I started receiving phone calls from people who suddenly remembered me.

They say it's very popular in Europe and the United States. People purchase looms, but don't know how to use them and they ask for help. So I did give some classes in 6-7 places. I taught doctors, who had to work with children and physically disabled people. But I certainly didn't get paid for that. I am a craftsperson and an experimentator, but I am not much of a businessperson."

-Why aren't your creations sold in Czechia? They are of great interest.

"I don't know where they are being sold and how many; I have partners who I work with. They probably know all that. I think that Czech babywearing mothers would rather buy cheaper colored fabrics."

-But, as far as I know, your wraps are highly talked about on babywearing forums, they are never resold, even when children grow up...

"This reminds me of the so-called "Panama hat effect". It is a hand-made hat of white colour, modern and stylish, made in Ecuador. Those, who make them, are poor people, but their products are worn by people of the upper class and they cost a lot. But, of course, the wealthy never get in contact with craftsmen, they have a structurized system of mediators.”

-But you're not a craftsman from Ecuador. 140 euros barely cover the expenses for such production.

"I tried to sell my products by myself. My friend and me used to come to people's homes, present our wraps to young moms and try to get them to like it, but usually their husbans chased us out of the house screaming "For so much? Get out of here!". I have tried to sell my products to some little specialized stores, which happen to be everywhere in Prague, but I was perceived as a crazy person, because the price seemed too high. A tourist needs something like a piece of soap or a wooden toy, which he can throw into his bag and go look around the city."

- Have you ever tried making something else besides baby wraps? Costumes, for example, or tapestry?

“We've tried numerous types of cloth, we even tried to process natural materials, like cotton, wool and flax. I would do that with great pleasure, but I can't find a supplier who would provide the same material for many years. If you make baby wraps, for example, you get a certificate for that and you have to work with only one supplier and use just one certain type of cloth. It is a problem, because all the textile products come from China."

Folia comes from the Latin "folium", which means "leaf". Girasol Folia was inspired by the beautiful fall, with it's amazing colors - brown, red, orange, yellow, green.

Tussah silk is also called wild silk. It is darker than the cultivated silk, also known as mulberry silk. The reason of such dark color is the diet of the worms. They live in their natural conditions in the forests of China and eat leaves of Arjun, Asan and Oak trees.

The fibers of Tussah silk are shorter and stronger than the fibers of the cultivated silk. It feels less "silky" as well.

The new edition of Nino with Tussah silk is amazing due to the contrast of white cotton and coffee-creme silk.

Na 3 intesieve niveau's bij Die Trageschule Dresden, de bekende draagschool in Duitsland, ben ik een gecertificeerd draagdoekconsulent! Het was een hele leuke, maar ook geen makkelijke opleiding want de kwaliteit bij Die Trageschule Dresden staat voor op. Een gecertificeerd draagdoekconsulent mag 1-op-1 consulten geweven, groepsworkshops en lezingen.

Er zijn een aantal draagscholen in Dresden. Mijn certificaal heb ik behaald bij de Trageschule Dresden geleid door Ulrike Höwer. Deze draagschool bestaat vanaf 1998 en heeft veel expertise op het hebied van het babydragen opgebouwd. Zo wordt er veel onderzoek gedaan in samenwerking met kinderartsen.

Alle opgeleide consulenten van Nederland zijn te vinden via de site van de Vereniging van de Draagdoekconsulenten.

Didymos roddels...

Van 11 t/m 13 juni ben ik in Dresden geweest op het vakcongres van de Trageschule Dresden. Het was heel leuk en leerzaam, maar het was ook een goede mogelijkheid om te zien wat Didymos van plan was. En zo te zien, zijn ze van plan om een doek van de nieuwe vezel te produceren - kapok. Voor het vakcongres hebben ze een paar doeken gemaakt van kapok - Welle Natuur, en in de herfst zijn ze van plan om meer kapok doeken te produceren.

Kapok is afkomstig van de kapokboom, een tropische soort boom die groeit in Zuid America, Centraal America, het Caribisch gebied en tropisch West Afrika. Vroeger werd kapok gebruik als vulmiddel voor de kussen.

Een exemplaar dat Didymos voor de vakcongres in Dresden heeft gemaakt voelde heel anders dan gewone doeken van katoen. Het leek er op dat de draden zelf wat dikker waren en dat de weving wat opener was. Nu even afwachten tot de herfst!

Individuele Draagconsult
Het draagconsult is aan te raden voor iedereen die zijn knooptechniek wil verbeteren of een nieuw knooptechniek wil leren.

Duur van het draagconsult
Een gemiddled consult duurt 60-90 min. Tijdens het consult oefenen wij met 1 knoopmethode.

Tarieven
De kosten zijn 50 euro per consult, ongeacht de type van de babydrager en knoopmethode.

Inhoud
Eerst gaan wij met de speciale poppen oefenen. De poppen zijn 4,5 kilo zwaar, en lijke op de echte baby. Als je de knoopmethode helemaal onder de knie hebt, ga je onder mijn begeleiding met je baby oefenen.

Het is gewenst om samen met de partner, oma of oppas te komen, zodat je rustig met de pop kunt oefenen.

Om het gebruik van de draagdoeken en andere ergonomische verantwoorde babydragers te promoten en stimuleren hebben een aantal draagdoekconsulentes een Vereniging van de Draagdoekconsulenten opgericht.

Alle consulentes hebben een speciale opleiding gevolgd en kunnen moeders en vaders professioneel begeleiden bij het gebruik van de draagdoek of andere babydrager. Op de site van de VDC kun je een consulente in jouw regio vinden. Alle consulenten die op de website staan, zijn leden van de Vereniging en hebben een professionele opleiding gevolgd.
